Lunch Language For Kids

By Diane Braun July 19, 2026

School days are right around the corner. I see families shopping for new backpacks and clothes, shoes and supplies.  What about lunch? That dreaded question every parent faces: buying or packing today?  If you're fortunate to have a child who loves getting that lunch tray every day in the cafeteria, that question just involves making sure there's money in their lunch account.  However, if the reply is "I'll take my lunch", now comes the challenge. What to pack. What will they eat. Cold pack. Nutritious vs. not-so-much.

One thing I learned as a parent was to let them choose what went in that lunch bag. When you think about it, if THEY choose their lunch, they can't complain and will hopefully eat it. There are so many ways to pack a lunch now that weren't around when my kids were young. Thermal lunch totes, cold packs, bento boxes, and more. Making a list before grocery shopping that your child approves can help lessen the daily lunch stress.

I found a checklist to help with making healthy choices. Explore the internet for other great resources.
