Test Season Is Coming

Is Your Student Ready?

October 5, 2026

As October gets underway, students are settling into the school year—and that means tests, quizzes, and exams are right around the corner. Whether your child is preparing for their first big elementary school test or starting to think about the SAT or ACT, a little preparation can make a big difference.

For Younger Students: Simple Ways to Prepare

Help elementary and middle school students build good test-taking habits with these simple tips:

 Start early: Review a little each day instead of cramming the night before.

 Quiz instead of just rereading: Ask your child questions or have them explain what they learned in their own words.

 Practice the tricky stuff: Spend extra time on the concepts and problem types they find difficult.

 Read carefully: Remind students to look for important words like not, except, best, and most likely.

 Practice pacing: Occasionally use a timer so students become comfortable working within a time limit.

 Prepare the night before: Pack supplies, charge devices, and get a good night's sleep.

Most importantly, remind students that one test doesn't define them. Good preparation, effort, and learning effective strategies can help them approach test day with greater confidence.

For Older Students: It's Time to Think SAT & ACT

For high school students, October is also a good time to take a closer look at college entrance exam preparation. SAT and ACT preparation isn't just about reviewing academic content. Students can also benefit from practicing pacing, time management, test-taking strategies, and staying focused under timed conditions.

Students with ADHD may face additional challenges with sustained attention, time management, working memory, and distractions. Breaking preparation into shorter sessions, using pacing checkpoints, and practicing strategies for difficult questions can help students build a plan that works for them.

Huntington provides personalized SAT and ACT preparation based on each student's strengths, needs, and goals.
